Budgeting for Animation Productions

Subject Description

If you?re interested in animation and want to develop your skills for a production manager or producer role, this microcredential will give you a strategic advantage. It?s designed to bridge the business and creative worlds of animation, outlining all the steps involved in developing a production budget. 

You?ll learn how to develop, modify and maintain a budget for 2D, 3D and alternative productions using cloud-based spreadsheets and best practices. In addition, you?ll have the tools to assess scripts and their feasibility from a financial perspective. And in your final assignment, you?ll create an accurate budget to forecast the costs of a production.

This microcredential was developed in collaboration with Smiley Guy Studios.

This microcredential provides the knowledge and skills necessary to develop, modify, maintain and meet the budget of an animated production. The lessons will help you understand the full pipeline of an animated project, including details surrounding human resources, contracts and budget implications.

Credit Status
A microcredential is a short course designed to help you upskill, reskill and boost new skills development. Seneca’s career- and profession-based microcredentials provide focused learning that add value to your existing education and enhance your employability. You will learn in-demand skills and knowledge and benefit from flexible options including different delivery modes, durations and start times.

This microcredential is issued in the form of a digital badge. Data embedded in the badge identifies the institution that issued it, along with the competencies, evidence and criteria that was required to earn it. Earners can display their badges on social media sites, electronic portfolios and resumés.

Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  • Understand the costs associated with the various roles and talent necessary for production
  • Learn how to adjust a budget to align with various project pipelines and schedules
  • Explore how to effectively use Excel or Google Sheets to produce a budget
  • Discover how to modify a production budget appropriately by considering the impact of fringes, grants, contingencies, tax credits and co-productions

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.

Mode of Instruction

Online Synchronous and Asynchronous (OB)

The course will include some synchronous online sessions occurring at a scheduled day and time, as well as self-directed activities which students complete at the time of their choosing while adhering to specified due dates. For example, a course may have bi-weekly scheduled live online sessions and asynchronous activities on the other weeks. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the course outline, the weekly schedule and important deadlines at the start of the course.

Modes of Evaluation
The student will earn the PAN101 microcredential by completing a set of authentic tasks and a final assessment that test the outlined skills and competencies. Learners will have the opportunity to reflect on their learning and experience. 
 
This course is not graded. SAT (Satisfactory) or UN (Unsatisfactory) designations will be noted on the transcript and will not affect GPA calculation.
