RPN to RN Professional Role Transition

Subject Description
In this course, learners will examine the legislation, standards and guidelines that direct the Registered Nurse's practice in Ontario. The importance of collaborative professional relationships in health care teams, both intra- and interprofessional, will be explored. As regulated health care professionals, learners will reflect on the role transition from RPN to RN practice in Ontario, their own personal learning style, and ways of knowing as it applies to self and the development of critical thinking and clinical judgement. Through the lens of trauma-informed care and patient safety, the therapeutic nurse-client relationship will be examined.

  1. Describe how nursing’s unique body of knowledge is used as a basis for entry to practice and standards in nursing practice.
  2. Compare the roles of various nursing organizations and their influence on nursing practice.
  3. Examine the role and responsibility of the nurse in the development of collaborative client and interprofessional team relationships.
  4. Apply knowledge of Scope of Practice and the commonalities and differences between categories of nurses to examine professional relationships and their influence on client outcomes.
  5. Use reflective practice to examine the transition from RPN to RN practice.
  6. Discuss the accountabilities and role of the RN when working with regulated and unregulated health care providers. 
  7. Apply the Three-Factor Framework for decision making in client care scenarios.
  8. Apply professional scholarly literature, relevant legislation, standards, and guidelines to inform critical thinking and clinical judgement in client care scenarios. 
  9. Explore how trauma-informed care and patient safety influence developing and maintaining the nurse-client therapeutic relationship.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
