Human Resources Management

Subject Description

This subject is a comprehensive overview of modern day human resources management (HRM). This course will introduce the diverse components of human resource (HR) functions and its role in the current business environment. Case study analysis will be used to link the theory to the practical situations that occur in HR. Topics to be covered include the business environment, a strategic approach to HRM, engaging Indigenous Peoples in the employment experience, understanding the importance of International HRM and Emotional Intelligence to an HR practitioner's career.

1. Describe the historical development and conceptual foundation of Human Resources Management.

2. Analyze specific functional areas in Human Resources Management and the knowledge required for a practitioner, namely in Organizing, Staffing, Learning, Performing and Rewarding.

3. Identify opportunities for HR to engage Indigenous Talent in the employment experience.

4. Appreciate the importance of International HRM in a practitioner's future career.

5. Describe the importance of Emotional Intelligence to succeed in today's work force.

6. Describe trends influencing the value of work and today's work force.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
