Subject Title
Professional Practicum II

Subject Description
This clinical practicum experience builds on knowledge and skills developed in previous courses. The student will continue to develop their professional nursing practice while applying decision-making and clinical skills through the application of the nursing process.  The student will integrate theoretical knowledge and use a relational practice approach to collaborate with clients, families and members of the health care team to provide safe and ethical care to medical surgical clients facing a variety of health challenges.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

All professional practicums are on a continuum from the student requiring assistance to the student performing independently to meet the learning outcomes.
 
Students will be expected to meet the learning outcomes as follows:
Knowledge Application:

  1. 1. At a novice level, with significant guidance articulate and utilize nursing and health sciences knowledge and research when assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating client care.
 
  1. 2. With significant guidance, for 1 stable client, applies appropriate knowledge and skills to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and document safe, competent, accurate, timely and culturally relevant nursing care by utilizing previously learned nursing skills such as therapeutic communication techniques; vital signs; basic comfort and hygiene and health promotion strategies.
 
Collaborative Relationships:
3. At novice level, begins to communicate and collaborate with peers, instructors, and health care team members in a professional manner, listening to and acknowledging others’ perspectives.
 
4. With significant guidance, engages in developmentally and culturally appropriate therapeutic and caring relationships with clients and families intentionally utilizing therapeutic communication techniques while respecting confidentiality, privacy and client’s rights.
 
Clinical Judgement:
5. With significant guidance, completes a holistic nursing assessment and formulates a nursing plan of care for one stable client.
 
6. With significant guidance, makes appropriate clinical decisions using relevant and accurate data and modifies the plan of care as appropriate based on the client’s response to previous nursing interventions.
 
Professionalism:
7. With significant guidance demonstrates use of Professional Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics to inform safe nursing care in the skills lab and in the clinical setting.
 
8. Practices in a professional manner, which complies with the college expectations, standards of the nursing regulatory body and practice-setting’s policies and procedures.
 
Social Justice:
9. With significant guidance identifies and considers principles of social justice and determinants of health as they relate to health outcomes, the environment (ecological, economic, global, etc.) for individuals and families.
 
10. With significant guidance Is aware of personal values and biases and how they may affect one’s nursing practice.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
