Lifespan IV - Pediatric Nursing

Subject Description
This course assists students to build upon, integrate and expand their existing knowledge, skills and experience as it applies to the pediatric population. This course focuses on applying a systematic, holistic and family-centred approach. The course will examine the environment and the crucial role of the family on healthy growth and development. The student will utilize the nursing process to study and analyze, common childhood illnesses, acute and chronic health conditions, and special care needs of the pediatric population. The course will assist the student to synthesize knowledge from current pediatric nursing research to promote excellence in providing evidence informed nursing care.

1. Apply knowledge of growth and development, health alterations, health assessment findings, underlying pathophysiology, risk factors, and clinical manifestations using the nursing process for optimal pediatric patient health outcomes.
2. Evaluate assessment data, including laboratory values and diagnostic information, regarding planning of nursing care for the acute and chronically ill pediatric patients.
3. Determine actual and potential complications related to health alterations and recognize the role of anticipatory planning in ongoing assessment and nursing care.
4. Use relevant nursing knowledge and research findings in assessing, planning, and evaluating information to provide evidence-informed and Trauma and violence Informed care to acutely and chronically ill pediatric patients and their families.
5. Evaluate therapeutic interventions in the provision of safe and competent nursing care (including medication calculations and administration in the pediatric population.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
