Subject Description

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Data Analytics within the context of financial services. This course focuses on data collection and compilation techniques tailored for reporting, financial analysis, research, and data visualization in the financial sector. Additionally, it offers an overview of the Modern Data Ecosystem, illustrating its relevance to the operational landscape of financial services. Throughout the course, students will explore diverse data types and develop the skills to systematically organize, analyze, and communicate insights using written and visualization methods. The course emphasizes the art of 'storytelling' with data, a critical skill for facilitating informed financial decision-making.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Assess the Modern Data Ecosystem, including data storage, retrieval, and processing systems, to determine appropriate solutions for storing, retrieving, and using data.
     
  2. Develop suitable approaches to define the data necessary to solve a specific business problem.
     
  3. Analyze data using statistical methods and data manipulation techniques to create compelling data visualizations that convey insights effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
     
  4. Communicate effectively using engaging visualizations to present data in a compelling narrative (“storytelling”) that aids organizational decision-makers to make informed evidence-based business decisions.
     
  5. Present informative and persuasive data-driven insights to influence business decisions.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
