The Role of the ECE in Full Day Kindergarten

Subject Description
This workshop discusses the role of the ECE working in full day kindergarten. The participants will explore what it means to be an Early Childhood Educator as a working partner with the public school teacher. The challenges of working in the FDK environment, applying play-based learning as required by the Ministry of Education's Full Day Kindergarten Curriculum are discussed. The ELECT (Early Learning for Every Child Today) and "How Does Learning Happen? Ontario's Pedagogy for the Early Years" documents will be explored in detail.

Credit Status
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance. NOTE: For participants who wish to use this workshop as part of their CPL portfolio, please consult with the CECE to verify it is applicable to the CPL requirements.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Understand the requirements of the Ministry of Education's Early Learning Program (Full Day Kindergarten).
2. Apply the CECE Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for ECEs working with families and children.
3. Practice professionally as an ECE in a collaborative teaching environment that respects the children, staff and families.
4. Develop a play-based curriculum model for full day kindergarten.
5. Evaluate the unique challenges for ECE's in the full day kindergarten program.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
