Business of Esports

Subject Description
Students discuss the business of esports and examine a business overview of the multi-faceted esports industry, its evolution, current state and emerging trends. Students will examine the ecosystem of esports and provide students with insider knowledge of the unique operational challenges of the industry. Students will develop insights on the ways companies create and develop properties for maximum revenue, the marketing of esports games for a mass audience, how brands and sponsors are attached to esports events, the management of financial resources and IP rights, and the various challenges that managers face depending on their role and function within the industry.

Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the roles and interrelationships between the major stakeholders, including teams, franchises, media, brands and athletes that comprise the esports ecosystem in Canada and globally.
  2. Compare the business models of esports teams and franchises at the amateur, semi-professional and professional levels to determine new ways to build brand equity and grow sources of revenue for an esports entity.
  3. Conduct a Situation Analysis to determine the key marketing challenges and opportunities facing an esports organization.
  4. Recommend marketing strategies to grow an esports entity's competitive advantage, brand value and industry position.
  5. Interpret changes in an esports entity's financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, statement of cash flow and retained earnings) over a period of time.
  6. Recommend revenue generating strategies to enhance sources of earned income for an esports organization including licensing of IP, merchandising and other ancillary rights.
  7. Create a pro forma income statement for an esports event based on revenue and cost projections
 
Evaluate the business information systems available to esports entities for improving organizational management and operational efficiencies.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
