Applied Communication for Business and Industry

Subject Description
Applied Communication for Business and Industry focuses on the knowledge and skills required for writing business correspondence and reports, as appropriate to the program of study. This course will help you gain business communication fundamentals which will be applied through various communication channels and with a variety of audiences. You will use a critical lens to analyze, synthesize, and present data. You will also learn to evaluate content created with emerging technology and learn to use it ethically. In addition, this course will provide you with industry presentation skills as well as group collaboration skills.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1.      Analyze diverse audiences, purposes, and contexts to adapt messages to meet communication objectives across diverse settings.
2.      Compose business and industry correspondence for a variety of audiences using language, style, and page design that aligns with inclusivity guidelines
3.      Create a variety of business reports and documents, using appropriate research, documentation, citation, and declaration practices
4.      Create and integrate visual aids into business documents
5.      Apply Generative AI literacy to create business and industry documents
6.      Create presentations for a variety of audiences using appropriate tools and techniques specific to industry standards.
7.      Collaborate to manage team projects, tasks, and requirements, using business and industry collaboration tools and documents

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
