Subject Title
Fire Dynamics and Ignition Sources

Subject Description
This course covers the fundamentals of combustion chemistry. This will include the combustion process, combustion categories, heat release rate, ignition sources, fire spread, and how to stop the combustion process. Lastly, the fire characteristics of gaseous, liquid, and solid combustibles will be examined in detail.

Credit Status
One college course credit.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Use appropriate industry terminology to facilitate a discussion regarding combustion with another professional
  2. Discuss various characteristics of combustion and the impact they may have on fire growth
  3. Perform simple heat release rate calculations to predict potential hazards for various fuels when ignited
  4. Determine if ignition sources are competent based on the available fuels to assess potential risk
  5. Classify various types of fire and flame to predict potential hazards of a situation
  6. Assess the unique risks posed by various states of matter to mitigate the likelihood of significant fires, explosions, flashovers, boilovers, backdrafts or other threats to life
  7. Select appropriate methods of terminating combustion for the expected fuel and environmental conditions to provide acceptable levels of protection for people and property
  8. Discuss how EDI, Sustainability, and TRC influence fire to provide fire protection for all

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
