Subject Title
Laboratory

Subject Description
The biotechnology laboratory requires strict adherence to safety, accuracy, precision, and aseptic technique to achieve complex objectives. Students acquire hands-on and theoretical knowledge in essential laboratory theory and laboratory skills within general biology and chemistry and microbial use. Students gain comfortability within the laboratory environment, required for safe, effective, and efficient laboratory-based investigations. Appropriate mathematical and computer-based analytical techniques are introduced in a variety of wet laboratory sessions. Students will participate in moderated online discussion in smaller groups to discuss and plan experiments.

Credit Status
One credit towards the Honours Bachelor of Science – Biotechnology (BBTA) Degree Program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1.    Adhere to safety, cleaning, maintenance, documentation and other good laboratory practices of relevance to the operation of the biotechnology laboratory.
2.    Utilize basic laboratory techniques for the preparation, dilution, storage and use of common biotechnological solutions and regents.
3.    Employ mathematical and graphical applications in biotechnology data analysis and laboratory administration.
4.    Identify limitations of the biotechnology laboratory processes and equipment by analysis of accuracy and precision.
5.    Distinguish important components of current biomolecule research projects to verbally and visually organize laboratory-based processes.
6.    Apply developed laboratory skills to prepare macromolecule samples for analysis.
7.    Demonstrate aseptic technique in the microscopic examination of live cells

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
