Presentation Skills
Subject Description
This subject prepares students to make professional oral presentations to diverse audiences in a variety of settings. The fundamentals of public speaking and speech writing are covered, as well as the production and use of presentational aids. Students will be introduced to Microsoft PowerPoint, tools from the Adobe Creative Cloud and other accessible cloud based applications. They will familiarize themselves with presentation techniques using both PowerPoint and other presentation aids.
Credit Status
LSP400 is a required subject in the Human Resources Strategy and Technology, International Accounting and Finance Degree and CIA -Honours Bachelor of Crime & Intelligence Analysis programs.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:
- Describe the personal importance of improving public speaking.
- Utilize strategies designed to minimize the fear associated with public speaking.
- Explain the communication process and typical communication challenges faced by public speakers
- Prepare a presentation plan that clearly outlines the purpose, audience, and objectives for the presentation
- Design and adapt different presentation openings, content and closings based on changes to purpose, audience and types of speech
- Demonstrate various uses of the voice and body language to enhance the presentation meaning
- Prepare a five-minute, impromptu presentation that incorporates the concepts of planning and delivery
- Provide constructive peer feedback of presentation skills
- Create video presentations using current digital technology

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.
Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
