Medical Office Simulations
Subject Description
This course prepares students with the knowledge and transferable skills to support a successful career launch as a medical administrative assistant.
The content provides students the opportunity to learn within simulated medical office experiences in office procedures, including working with forms and records typically used by the administrative assistant and applying medical transcription skills. The simulated office provides an authentic learning experience in which the student develops self-reliance through decision-making and exposure to increasingly more complex administrative skills.
Credit Status
This subject is a credit applicable towards the Office Administration - Health Services program, offered through the School of Legal, Public, and Office Administration.
This course is a required credit as an alternative to MFP501 (Medical Field Placement).
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:
- Support the operations and functions of a medical office environment through simulated projects and/or exercises and professor feedback.
- Apply scheduling, task coordination, and organizational skills to complete tasks and meet deadlines in a simulated medical office environment.
- Manage patient, financial, and other records.
- Successfully attend at a simulated office environment, carrying out duties as assigned by the professor Complete medical office tasks as scheduled/assigned through simulation exercises.
- Apply effective interpersonal skills in the simulated workplace to assist in the completion of individual tasks.
- Provide technical support and training related to computer software to others in the simulated medical environment as required.
- Use the Internet and its tools in a simulated medical environment to enhance communication and business opportunities.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.
Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
