Calculus for Biotechnology

Subject Description
This course is the second course in the standard sequence of courses designed for biotechnology students to acquire essential mathematical skills as they pertain to the field of Biotechnology. Students engage in lecture and group learning in the exploration of integral calculus, integration techniques, integral applications, and introduction to differential equations. Applications and examples illustrate the utility of these principles in the Life Science arena, such as using differentiation to introduce students to optimizing microbial growth rates in fermenters in biopharmaceutical production; using integration to introduce students to calculating concentrations of substances during an enzymatic reaction; and using differential equations to introduce students to antigenic shift and the need for updated vaccines. Students develop facility in applying these concepts utilizing computational technology to generate and assess data within applicable biotechnological problems and application of the developed mathematical skills to the economics of biotechnology.  Also, students will use MyMathLab for video recordings of lectures with visual walk-throughs solving various math problems.

Credit Status
One credit towards the Honours Bachelor of Science – Biotechnology (BBTA) Degree Program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1.    Calculate integrals using integration techniques.
2.    Evaluate definite integrals using the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
3.    Solve differential equations using anti-derivative and integration techniques.
4.    Describe equilibria and their stability for autonomous differential equations using differentiation concepts.
5.    Solve biological problems in net change and initial conditions by applying integration techniques.
6.    Analyze functions using technology to demonstrate calculus concepts and methods

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
