Subject Title
Advanced Eyeglass Dispensing Theory

Subject Description
This subject provides the students with the theoretical foundations for dispensing and managing
specialized prescriptions, which include high prescriptions, occupational lenses, safety wear and
sun wear. Lens designs, powers, advanced measuring devices and specific fitting techniques
required to customize vision wear are considered within the framework of practical dispensing.
Particularities of dispensing eyewear to children and elderly are discussed and emphasis is
placed on the professional responsibility of the optician to assure patient continuous care and
satisfaction.

magnification.
1.1 Present the visual characteristics of high plus lenses.

1.4 Highlight the importance of UV protection for aphakic patients.
1.5 Discuss cataract spectacles in aphakic correction in terms of advantages,
disadvantages, lens design and retinal image magnification.

1.7 Present visual characteristics of high minification lenses.
1.8 Identify types of high minus power ophthalmic lenses.
1.9 Discuss procedures for fitting the high minus prescription:
1.10 Relate aspheric and atoric lens designs in terms of fitting techniques.

1.12 Present the fitting implications of panthoscopic tilt, retroscopic tilt and wraparound.
1.13 Discuss the effect on image magnification in high-powered prescriptions.
1.14 Discuss aniseikonic correction.
1.15 Discuss adaptive response and patient education.
1.16 Present the theory of Fresnel lenses and prisms and applications for their use.
1.17 Discuss adapting response and patient education on eyeglass wear and care.

2. Demonstrate the effect of lens thickness on eyeglasses overall appearance and lenses
performance.
2.1 Discuss factors which influence the overall eyeglass appearance and methods of
correction.
2.2 Discuss frames and lens options, which will minimize the effect of lens thickness.
2.3 Use formulas to calculate the edge thickness of high minus lenses.
2.4 Use formulas to calculate the center thickness of high plus lenses.

3. Analyze the importance of customized vision wear in preserving ocular health and vision
quality.
3.1 Define safety and vocational lenses.
3.2 Discuss the purpose of wearing customized eyewear.
3.3 Recognize the need for eye protection in environments where potential eye hazards
are.
3.4 Recognize occupations and hobbies with a high risk for eye injuries.
3.5 Discuss prescription and non-prescription protective eyewear options for vary
occupations.
3.6 Explain appropriate applications of lens materials for safety eyewear.
3.7 Discuss lenses impact resistance tests requirements.
3.8 Explain the effects of lens coatings and surface scratches on impact resistance.

4.2 Discuss the high incidence of increase myopia in children and myopia control options.
4.3 Discuss spectacle methods used to slow the progression of myopia.
4.4 Discuss myopia control management.
4.5 Identify the risk factors related to sports, ocular injuries and damage to the young eye
from UV exposure.

5. Asses the complexities of vision and aging to provide functional vision for the elderly.
5.1 Explain eyewear options addressing the normal age-related changes in vision.
5.2 Explain changes in visual function in the normal, healthy aging eye.
5.3 Recommend appropriate corrective lens materials and designs for the older adult.
5.4 Specify the importance of protecting the aged eye from glare and UV radiation.
5.5 Recommend appropriate frame materials and styles for fitting the older adult.

6. Outline the follow-up and continuous care protocols for eyewear.
6.1 Explains to the patient prior to dispensing the proper use and care of eyewear.
6.2 Prepare continuous care plan for the patient to assure eyeglasses are functioning as
expected.
6.3 Perform a fit revaluation at the follow-up visit

7. Examine cases of advanced eyewear dispensing and make appropriate recommendations
for patients.
7.1 Present specific cases of high Rx dispensing and make recommendations for lenses,
frames, vertex distance, compensation, tilt and wrap.
7.2 Present dispensing situations related to fitting children and make appropriate
recommendations for frames and lenses.
7.3 Present dispensing situations related to fitting safety eyeglasses and choose frames
and lenses specific to each occupation.
7.4 Present dispensing situations related to fitting sports eyeglasses and select
appropriate frames and lenses specific to very physical activities.
7.5 Present post-surgical eyeglass dispensing options.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
