Sales and Marketing for Retirement Communities
Subject Description
This course introduces the student to consumer-based services marketing and sales as applied to the Long Term Care and Retirement Communities industry. Students will define marketing and demonstrate an understanding of consumer behavior, market segmentation, the marketing mix, application to the marketing plan, and the principles of selling.
Credit Status
One full credit.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:
- Define the principles of sales and marketing in the seniors' industry.
- Complete market research activities to identify the client in a diverse seniors' population.
- Provide interpretation and analysis of routine marketing data and plans to inform departmental activities.
- Develop and evaluate operational marketing strategies that effectively address access to a diverse client market.
- Create and operationalize in-house promotion and tours.
- Apply the ABC principle of selling to Retirement Communities situations, including using effective personal selling techniques, up-selling, and making sales calls.
- Prepare and deliver sales presentations using various techniques.
- Demonstrate an understanding of principles of event planning.
- Develop marketing strategies to improve fundraising.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.
Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
