Subject Title
Compiler Design

Subject Description
The structure, organization and design of the phases of a compiler are considered. A compiler translates code written in one computer language into a language understandable by the computer hardware without changing the meaning of the program. Students gain knowledge of the scope handlers and type checkers and learn to implement components of a compiler. Compiler design is also applicable to other areas of software engineering such as a lexical analyzer used in text editors, information retrieval system, and pattern recognition programs or a parser used in a query processing system such as SQL, for example. Many software having a complex front-end may need techniques used in compiler design.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1.    Arrange tokens from the source code as the first stage in the creation of an executable binary.
2.    Construct a data structure based on tokens for the compiler in the creation of an executable program.
3.    Test the syntax of source code for suitability to the grammar of the computer language.
4.    Assess compiler symbols, their types and their relations with each other for program correctness.
5.    Construct middle-level language code to connect source code to the assembly language code for a given hardware.
6.    Organize memory according to the source code for faster access time and less capacity.
7.     Design high-level and low-level optimizations to enhance execution performance.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
