Leisure Travel Theory and Practice
Subject Description
This course is designed to current tourism trends, in the leisure travel market, beyond basic travel reservations. The components include the leisure travel sales, the leisure traveller, current top leisure destinations, current cruise trends, the present and future trends in tours, including adventure tours and ecotourism. Leisure services such as groups, incentives and travel insurance are discussed, and will prepare you to perform applicable functions.
Credit Status
One credit towards the Tourism-Services Management (Travel Services Specialization), Tourism-Services Management (Meetings, Conventions and Events Specialization), Tourism-Services Management (Global Tourism Business Specialization), and Tourism-Travel Operations Certificate.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:
- Explain the role of a travel consultant and intermediaries in the travel and tourism industry.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the overall Travel Industry, the packaging and the distribution of various elements of those packages.
- Keep current with changes to legislation and regulations within the tourism industry.
- Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the various travel industry components and day to day operations.
- Obtain knowledge to write the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO).
- Prepare clear and accurate invoices including calculating relevant taxes, surcharges, commissions, and using foreign exchange rates including proper documentation on invoices so customers are clear on restrictions they have agreed to purchase.
- Recommend and quote travel insurance products, quote international travel regulations, and compare and contrast products and companies.
- Use basic industry and trade terminology as appropriate in communications with customers, colleagues, and supervisors.
- Apply technical skills and knowledge preparing and advising travel documentation.
- Apply appropriate knowledge when selling Insurance.
- Explain the ECPAT-USA policies, and awareness to join the fight to end Child Trafficking in the Global Travel and Tourism Industry.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.
Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
