Urban Design and Landscape Design

Subject Description
This course explores urban design and landscape elements within the public realm that shape our urban spaces and encompass our daily experiences in cities. Students will analyze social, political, economic and environmental dimensions of city-building in the context of best practices and successful case studies to arrive at urban design and landscape principles and methods that will be applied to a real-world development project. 

Credit Status
One credit towards the Sustainable Urban and Transportation Planning Graduate Certificate

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Create development plans for urban planning and transportation projects in accordance with municipal, provincial and federal legislation.
2. Negotiate with stakeholders to facilitate decision making in sustainable urban and transportation planning processes that meets the needs of all parties.
3. Adhere to the unique planning processes of Indigenous communities to address the needs of the community and support sustainability.
4. Justify planning decisions in contemporary urban environments using current and emerging theories and sustainable best practices locally and nationally.
5. Design innovative sustainable solutions and policy recommendations to problems identified during development site projects.
6. Gain knowledge of the urban design principles and fundamentals through the examination of real-life projects and their implementation process.
7. Understand the social, economic and cultural values of public realm.
8. Evaluate the built form and space configuration of urban developments.
9. Design inclusive and sustainable urban fabric that shapes the everyday experiences of its users by integrating the architectural, landscape and socio-economic aspects of the environment.
10. Evaluate landscape best practices and principles as it relates to a development or transit project.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
