With the cultural diversity Toronto possesses, eating out can be an
adventure in foreign tastes. Neighbourhoods flaunting flavours from the
Far East to Continental Cuisine are dispersed throughout the city for
your dining pleasure.
Italian
Toronto's famous Little Italy is on College Street West and there's also
the Corso Italia a little further north along St. Clair West. Here you'll
find authentic Italian cuisine, whether in cozy cafes or upscale dining
rooms, washed down with the legendary cups of espresso Italians love.
Indian & South Asian
Throughout Toronto you'll find a diverse mix of Indian and South Asian
cuisine, including Afghani, Bengali, Madras, Sri Lankan, and Tandoori. For
Vegetarians, many of these cooking styles boast excellent non-meat dishes
as well, making them not only delicious but inexpensive as well.
Canadian & American
Toronto has thousands of eateries providing North American cooking, from
burgers to steaks to maritime lobster. There are economical fast food
outlets, greasy spoon lunch counters, sports bars, buffets, or upscale
bistros and steak houses. From chicken wings to Tex Mex to California
Fusion, there's a wide variety of North American styles to choose from.
Would you like fries with that?
Eastern European
On Roncesvalles Avenue and Bloor West Village you'll find Toronto's
Eastern Europeans and their hearty cuisine. Polish, Ukrainian, Latvian and
Russian restaurants and delis serve borscht, cabbage rolls, pirogues, plus
lamb, beef Stroganoff and seafood dishes.
Latin
A number of restaurants serving Latin and Hispanic cuisine can be found in
Toronto. On Dundas Street West you'll find Portugal Village where they
serve seafood, churrasco (Portuguese barbecue) and Brazilian fare.
Elsewhere in the city there are eateries serving Mexican, Argentine,
Chilean, Cuban, Peruvian and Spanish cuisine.
Greek
Toronto's legendary Greektown on Danforth Avenue between Chester and Jones
is home to a number of excellent restaurants serving Greek cuisine,
although you can also find them all around town. Classic Greek dishes
include roast lamb, moussaka, spanakopita, souvlaki, dolmades and the
national dessert, baklava.
Middle Eastern
Toronto has a wealth of Middle Eastern restaurants serving a variety of
fare from the region. There are Lebanese, Persian, Turkish, Syrian, and
Moroccan eateries that serve up kabobs, falafels, stews, eggplant
casseroles and more. Around Bathurst and Lawrence streets, Toronto's
Jewish community offers lox, bagels, blintzes, smoked meat sandwiches and
other kosher cuisine.
Chinese & Asian
Toronto has hundreds of Chinese restaurants, many of them located in the
various Chinatowns within the city. Chinese cooking styles include
Szechwan, Hunanese, Mandarin, and Cantonese. But the Asian influence in
cuisine goes much further. There are many Vietnamese, Thai and Korean
restaurants throughout the city's neighbourhoods, plus a number of
Indonesian, Filipino and Malaysian eateries.
Japanese
There's more to Japanese cooking than just sushi ... although that's very
popular in Toronto. Other Japanese dishes include noodles and vegetables
in a variety of sauces, and the Japanese style of barbequing, including
teriyaki beef. Many restaurants cook right at your table, and dinner is as
much fun to watch as it is to eat.
Afro-Caribbean
With Toronto's large African and West Indian population, it's not
surprising that Afro-Caribbean food is popular. From the curries and stews
of East African cooking to the patties and jerk chicken of Jamaican
dishes, you'll be able to find savoury and spicy Afro-Caribbean cuisine
throughout Toronto.
French
French cooking is world famous and well represented in Toronto. From the
upscale gourmet fare of Toronto's poshest restaurants and grand hotels, to
the bevy of small innovative bistros sprinkled throughout the city, from
continental to Canadian, French fare abounds.
British & Irish
British influence in Canada is widespread, and includes the pubs and
restaurants as well. There are hundreds of English-style pubs around town
serving traditional favorites, from bangers and mash to fish and chips, or
more upscale venues for afternoon tea or fine dining. Toronto also has
several Irish pubs where you can enjoy traditional Irish folk music along
with your pint of Guinness.
